Pic-of-The-day - "Fruit Cake".

These are from a few years ago (2010) but we still make fruit cake at Christmas and, as illustrated here, we set aside one cake to "feed" in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

This years cake is made & being fed with a Whiskey (just like the photos) & European liquor that has the taste of Christmas Spices

Daily Post - November 26 - Looking forward to & back at Boxing Day

Pic-of-The-day - "Leaf & Berry".
We're in the thick of it now.  Christmas is really in full swing for the next month.

In one month it will be Boxing day, Christmas day will be past and that magical week between Christmas and New years will have begun.

Boxing Day (or St. Stephen's Day) is usually a good day for me.  It's a day off work, that consists of old movies, new gifts, lots of snack, & a little reading. If I'm very lucky... not much else.

The week between the holidays was great when I was a kid. It was toys & candy, Pajamas & TV, records & board games. The tree was up and the outdoor lights where on at night. It seemed like time had stopped.

In fact I remember thinking, at one point, that the old year ended on Christmas and the New one Started on January 1st so the time in between didn't belong to either. I knew enough to think "that must make a lot of trouble for banks & jobs and things"  but,  that was for someone else to worry about. I just had to flip over the Julie Andrews record & sneak another chocolate ball from the bowl on the stereo.

Daily Post - November 24 - Brimstone

Pic-of-The-day - "Brimstone".

Photos from a tasting at Brimstone brewery in Ridgeway Ontario.

I went with a group from work for a tasting to explore the idea of making local brews available in the future maybe for special events or even on a more regular basis.

The first glass isn't full  because I took the much anticipated first sip and then thought "hey, I brought my camera, I should be taking photos of these".

After that I patiently snapped a photo or two of each sample before trying it.

If I remember correctly (it's been a few weeks now)
we sampled:

Enlightenment Blond Ale
Hail Mary Session Ale
Bitter Rivals English Bitter
Sinister Sinister IPA
Chicory Oatmeal Stout.

November 23 - Daily Post - Golden Hour

Golden Hour

What is Golden Hour & why would  I be interested in it?

Golden Hour is that great time just before sunset when the sun in low and imparts a great warm light & soft shadows. It's a favourite time of day for photographers & cinematographers. The light at this time of day does great things, it can give skin a wonderful glow, it can create nice shadows that give definition without obfuscation. So many people sing it's praises that it is almost a cliche.

Although some of the glories ascribed to golden hour might be a bit extreme it's still something to be explored.

I say explored because it takes a bit of effort & experience to get good golden hour photos, same as with photos taken at any other time.  You can't just say "oh, it's 30 minutes til sunset" and point your lens in any direction push the shutter & be guaranteed a captivating piece of art.

With basic photgraphic techniques, a bit of observation &, probably some trial & error, you can get some really interesting results. This formula of basic techniques, observation & trial will usually work in most situations. This is another reason I used the word 'explore' earlier. When shooting at "solar noon" with the sun directly above you it makes very little difference how you arrange yourself & the subject in respect to the light as it will always be directly above you.  I've heard this time of day called the "ugliest", "most boring" & "worst" part of the day to shoot outdoors using all natural light. The idea follows that the farther away from that light/ sun position your are the nicer or more appealing the light will be.

Obviously with some skill and a bit of kit you can make the light at "solar noon" look much more pleasing and do just about what you want.  But, that's not what we're talking about today. We're talking about exploring golden hour. At noon there's modifying , but not much exploring of the light.  where at golden hour it can be more about exploring what the existing can do for you "out of the box" or "as is".    You look at the sun and the subject and work out from there, you can still add modifiers and other tools to enhance your photos if needed. For me at least,  golden hour is about seeing what the natural light can do alone and building on that. The light might give me something different than I had planned, but that's what exploring is all about.

Christmas Eve Fireworks are as regular an event as we we can make them. Some years they are more extensive than others, but we generally manage at least a quick  round of fire & sparks.

2017 Christmas List

This years list seems longer than ever. I just kept jotting things down when I thought of them, regardless of how practical or impracticable they are. Therefore I don't have any expectations, just providing information.
There are three sections this year. Stuff to do, stuff to buy & stuff to search out.

Stuff to Do
  • Follow me on: Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, blogger, twitter, G+, Red Bubble
  • Tell someone about something I posted/made through Re-posting, forwarding, or sharing in some way.
  • Comment on an item.
Just like last year I'm trying to gain a bit more of an audience, and every little bit helps.

Stuff to Buy
  1. $Store: Crocks, headphones, toque, chapstick,
  2. Bridge mix, Chocolate Cherries, Maple Buds
  3. Cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds, hot olives, old cheese,
coconut roll dates (bulk Barn #2195)
  4. Track pants  or 'lounge' pants size XXL
  5. Gloves for taking photos in the winter.
  6. Warm Blanket. Nothing special just a warm blanket. I'm adding this one because on some older pictures and realized I've been using the same one for at least 15 years.
  7. Totes. Rubbermaid or similar
  8. Vinyl Cafe CD “The Unreleased Stories” Digital version or CD version is also available. & the NEW Christmas book from amazon with unreleased stories
  9. Ticket to 'Mythos' by Stephen Fry & Starring Stephen Fry at the Shaw festival.
EXTRAS: Arrogant Worms Stuff clothing, book etc.  (I already have the complete discography)

Stuff to Search Out
(Wish List)
  1. Cheap Old camera lenses (1970's, 80's mostly) from thrift stores, garage sales etc. Cheap is the operative word here, if it's described as 'rare' or 'sought after' walk away. 1)BRAND/Mount If they are Nikkor/Nikkon, Canon FD, or Mintola MC are all great as I can use them right away. 2) Focal length is like a zoom, but there is only one number. Common lengths are: 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm 135mm. there are bigger lengths, but I wouldn't bother with them.
  2. Christmas records (real vinyl records) almost any Christmas record is good. Unusual, interesting, & old are all bonus qualities, but the holy grail is still Firestone Christmas album #4. It's a 7 record set & I have them all except #4 . So, if your at a second hand store or a garage sale & see Firestone #4 you have found the perfect gift!
  3. While your looking at vinyl just about anything that's on 78 could be interesting.
  4. Any Anything by Louis Armstrong is good, especially older stuff.
  5. In the same vein, another item I'm always on the lookout for is bubble lights, not the reproductions, but the originals (40'&50's). These are basically impossible to find, but hey you never know.

UPDATES: (Things that have come up since posting)
    * Hair trimmer

Merry Christmas!

 Pic-of-The-day - "What's inside?".

I had been told the building is still used, but it looked pretty abandon to me, then more windows started disappearing until they where almost all gone. Finally about a week ago I walked by at night and there where lights on and possibly work being done. I have no idea what is being done, but I walk by on the way to work each morning, so we'll see what happens.
